Derby Theatre

AKA North was appointed to provide full creative services to Derby Theatre following a competitive pitch process.

The first key piece of artwork to be completed is for the 2019 production of the much-loved family classic ‘The Jungle Book’. We presented a diverse range of visual executions at the initial concept stage from figurative illustration and photo montage to a variety of ideas for a cast-led photoshoot. The final artwork makes use of a fresh colour palette and bold visual themes to create an intriguing typographic entry point into this brand new play with music. Designed to appeal to a range of ages, playful character silhouettes inhabit the letterforms while scratched claw marks allude to the dramatic climax of the story.  Crucially this new production showcases a set of original songs. In this respect a key requirement of the brief was to set the campaign visuals away from versions of the story audiences might already be familiar with, particularly Disney’s 1967 and 2016 feature films. The concept also has scope to incorporate other characters as the campaign rolls out across different media channels.
